At the same time, Brewster placed two small stones on the ground, one where Carly was currently standing and one near the edge of the hole.

“Now, this I remember from when we were shooting before,” Carly said. “These are my marks, right? I walk from one to the other?”

“Exactly,” Brewster said with a smile.

What was happening? This didn’t feel like work. Like his mom told him, he was having fun. Everyone was getting along. Everything was running smoothly. Was this even possible? Was this—

“STOOOOOPPPPP!”

Of course, it wasn’t possible.

“STOOOOOPPPPP! DON’T SHOOT!”

The voice was Godfrey’s. Costumes erupted from his arms as he careened toward Brewster and the camera.

“Slow down,” Rosa said. “You’ll get them dirty.”

Godfrey immediately handed off half the costumes to Rosa and the other half to Izzy. Then he grabbed Brewster by the shoulders. “This is a disaster,” he said.

“Wait, what is?” Brewster said, worried that some unseen danger was lurking above or below or possibly all around them. He had promised to keep everyone safe and now—

“Your shot is backlit,” Godfrey said.

“What?”

“That means the sun is behind the shot, which makes everything shadowy and washed out,” Godfrey said frantically. “And you should really have something in the foreground to show the depth of the field and—”

“You’re not happy with the shot?” Brewster asked. “Is that all this is?”

“But that’s what matters, right?” Godfrey said. “How it looks? It needs to look perfect, and sorry, Brewster, but while you may have an eye for some things, you don’t have an eye for perfect.”

Before Brewster even had a chance to get offended, Godfrey moved the tripod and camera over a few feet, and then he hustled to the barn and found a red Radio Flyer wagon. He rolled it in front of the camera, putting it in the foreground, on the left side of the shot. Through the viewfinder, Carly still appeared in the frame. Hands on hips, she waited for instructions.

“Better,” Godfrey said. “But can we get her in nicer clothes?”

“What’s wrong with what she’s wearing?” Brewster said. “It’s authentic.”

“Movie stars aren’t authentic,” Godfrey said. “They surpass authentic.”

Carly pointed at him. “I like that. What he said.”

“Izzy!” Godfrey shouted. “The silver dress!”

The silver dress certainly surpassed authentic. It glittered in the late-day sun, like it was made of mirrors, or perhaps diamond scales. Izzy held it up, and Carly was drawn into its gravity. She ran a hand across the front and asked, “Is it bulletproof?”

“Not that I’m aware of,” Godfrey said. “But it’s boring-proof.”

“I’ll put it on!” Carly announced as she snatched it and raced to the barn to change.

“Really?” Brewster said to Godfrey.

“You have a problem with the costume?”

“She’s supposed to be a regular girl who discovers a portal in her yard,” Brewster said. “Not some model or something.”

“This is a trailer, right?” Godfrey said.

“As I keep reminding everyone,” Rosa added.

“And because it’s a trailer, we don’t know what happens in the real movie before this scene or after this scene,” Godfrey said.

“I think the audience can make some guesses,” Brewster said.
